From the earliest phases of resort design, Colin C. Cameron, founder of the Kapalua Resort,
envisioned a community where man and nature are pono, in balance and in harmony with each other.
Today, Colin Cameron's vision is a living reality where visitors, residents and resort employees
are thriving in a healthy environment rich in culture and history, quality of life and
environmental sensitivity.
Pu'u Kukui Preserve Since 1988, Maui Land & Pineapple Company, Inc., parent company of Kapalua Resort, has protected
the 8,661-acre rainforest and watershed in the West Maui Mountains. In 1992, this pristine and
biologically rich area was dedicated to the Nature Conservancy of Hawaii, creating the largest
private nature preserve in the State of Hawaii and ensuring that this natural resource will
remain intact for future generations.
The Pu'u Kukui Preserve is home to 20 percent of Hawaiis native plants including three native bird species, five extremely rare snail species and 18 native plants found nowhere else in the world.
Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary In 1991, the Kapalua Bay Course became the first golf course in the world to be certified as an
Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary by the Audubon International due to its superior management
practices of water conservation, wildlife protection, water quality management, integrated pest
management and environmental planning. Today, all three Kapalua Resort golf courses and the resort
grounds are certified as Audubon sanctuaries offering protection to 23 species of birds and an
on-going preservation program for native plants and habitat.
Marine Life Preserves Kapalua Resort is home to Hawaii State Conservation Districts along Kapalua Resorts dramatic lava shoreline,
including five bays and three white sand beaches. In 1978, to protect the ancient lava formations,
brilliant coral gardens and spectacular marine life, Honolua Bay and Mokuleia Bay, were declared
Hawai'i State Marine Life Conservation Districts. These underwater parks are home to Hawaiian
green sea turtles, monk seals and abundant marine life.
Some of the most spectacular beaches in Hawaii are located in Kapalua Resort and are easily accessible to
snorkelers and divers.
