June 2, 1999

KAPALUA, Maui, Hawaii -- "This Month at the Mercedes Championships" features news from Kapalua's Plantation Course and the 2000 Mercedes Championships, Jan. 6-9:

PGA TOUR Gives Plantation Course An "A" Grade

PGA TOUR Director of Agronomy Jon Scott's Mid-May visit to Kapalua's Plantation Course went extremely well, as the course was evaluated prior to the 2000 Mercedes Championships. Even with record play at Kapalua during April and May, the Plantation Course received high marks. "With very little effort they could have the course ready for the Mercedes Championships if the tournament were next week," said Scott, whose staff of five visits every tournament site throughout the year to make sure each course is in the best-possible condition for tournament play. "The job of preparing the course for the tournament in January should be very easy. I'm impressed with their ability to do things first-class."

Mercedes Championships Charity Team Seventh With $1,955,983 in Earnings

The Mercedes Championships 1999 MasterCard Charity Team includes Tim Herron, Loren Roberts, Jim Gallagher Jr., and Woody Austin, who have combined to win $1,955,983 in earnings to date on the PGA TOUR. Recent victories by Herron (Bay Hill) and Roberts (GTE Byron Nelson) have helped the Mercedes Championships charity team move up several positions to eighth place in the competition that distributes funds to charities throughout the country.

More New Faces Qualify for 2000 Mercedes Championships

Carlos Franco's first PGA TOUR victory at the Compaq Classic of New Orleans earned the Paraguayan citizen a trip to his first Mercedes Championships. Franco's accomplishment is all the more significant when you consider there are only three golf courses in all of Paraguay. Meanwhile, Rich Beem joined Franco as a first-time qualifier for the Mercedes Championships by earning a victory at the Kemper Open. It was Beem's first victory in his rookie year on the PGA TOUR. Other players who won tournaments in May to qualify for the Mercedes Championships include Loren Roberts (GTE Byron Nelson Classic) and Olin Browne (The MasterCard Colonial), who qualified for the Mercedes Championships for the first time last year.

In the issue that appears on newsstands June 8, the article "World's Best Service" names the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua seventh in its rankings of all the hotels in the world (and first among all hotels in Hawaii).
