May 10, 1999

KAPALUA, Maui, Hawaii -- "This Month at the Mercedes Championships" features news from Kapalua's Plantation Course and the 2000 Mercedes Championships, Jan. 6-9:

Mercedes Championships Spurs Development at Kapalua

Dramatic new developments continue at Kapalua, as the resort is planning to develop 33 acres of oceanview property in the Plantation Estates subdivision perched high above the 16th and 17th holes of The Plantation Course. Development will consist of a minimum of 14 two-acre lots.

The Agronomists are Coming! The Agronomists are Coming!

Imagine having a turf management consultant coming to your house several times a year to help you keep your lawn in the best condition possible. Well, that is exactly what PGA TOUR Director of Agronomy Jonathan Scott did May 6 when he toured The Plantation Course. Scott and his staff of six visit each course on the PGA TOUR at various times during the year to assist with preparation for tournament play.

Mercedes Championships On Pace For Strong Field

Despite defending champion David Duval's four PGA TOUR victories this year, 15 players have qualified for the 2000 Mercedes Championships. Incidentally, that is the same number of players who had qualified for the tournament at this time last year. Jose Maria Olazabal (The Masters), first-time qualifier Glen Day (MCI Classic), Jesper Parnevik (Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic) and Stuart Appleby (Shell Houston Open) each qualified with their PGA TOUR victories in April.
