KAPALUA, Maui, Hawaii -- Today, Kapalua Land Company, Ltd. announced the appointment of Kim David Carpenter as the new tournament director for the Mercedes Championships.

As director, he will be responsible for overseeing tournament management, operations, marketing and sales for the Mercedes Championships, an official PGA TOUR event. He will report directly to the tournament chairman and vice president/resort operations, Gary Planos.

Carpenter brings to Kapalua over 15 years of experience in the golf industry. He served as senior vice president, marketing and sales for Aldila, Inc., a world leader in graphite golf shafts; and, most recently, executive vice president of golf development for Callaway Golf Company, a leader in golf equipment sales.

"We are very pleased to have Kim Carpenter joining our Mercedes Championships team." said Planos. "His extensive marketing and sales background, organizational and management skills and expertise in the golf industry and player relations will enhance the strength of our tournament staff. We look forward to working with Kim as he takes the Mercedes Championships to a new level and continues to position Kapalua resort as one of the world’s top golf destinations."

Born and raised in Tarzana, Calif., Carpenter graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where he played on the varsity golf team from 1977-1981. He later earned his masters degree in international management from the American Graduate School of International Management in Glendale, Ariz.

The Mercedes Championships is the first stop on the PGA TOUR and features a limited field of winners from the previous year competing on Kapalua’s 7,263-yard, par 73 Plantation Course. The 2000 Mercedes Championships will be scheduled Jan. 6-9. All four rounds will be televised live in primetime by ESPN.
