Kapalua Golf Academy Grand Opening Held March 1

KAPALUA, Maui, Hawaii -- "This Month at the Mercedes Championships" features news from Kapalua's Plantation Course and the PGA TOUR's Mercedes Championships:

Kapalua Golf Academy Grand Opening Held March 1

Kapalua resort celebrated the grand opening of the Kapalua Golf Academy and the Village Putting Course March 1 with a traditional Hawaiian blessing. Located on 23 acres, the 3,500 square-foot Academy features three classrooms as well as a golf-specific strength and flexibility room staffed and equipped to address the physical aspects of the golf swing. A 525-square foot digital video bay allows for swing analysis using the V1 digital three-camera system. Surrounding the Academy is 85,000 square feet of grass tee area.

Collins Named Senior Superintendent for Kapalua

Steve Collins has been named golf course superintendent for Kapalua Land Company, Ltd. Collins was instrumental with the preparation of The Plantation Course for the 2000 Mercedes Championships as a consultant, and brings an experienced background to Kapalua with major tournament and turfgrass operations. He is a 1991 graduate of Pennsylvania State University with an associate's degree in Turfgrass Management.

Carter, Clarke, Mickelson and Triplett Qualify for 2001 Mercedes Championships

Jim Carter (Tucson Open), Darren Clarke (World Match Play Championship), Phil Mickelson (Buick Open) and Kirk Triplett (Nissan Open) qualified for the 2001 Mercedes Championships with victories this month.
