Hawai`i Council Maintains Cultural Values and Customs at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua

The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua Hawai`i Council is responsible for the successful implementation of Hawaiian cultural values and customs into daily resort activities.

Established when the hotel opened October 1992, the mission of the council is to be the hospitality industry leader in perpetuating the traditions of Hawai`i to enhance the cultural experience of island visitors. The committee of approximately 25 employees also advises the hotel's executive management on protocol and customs.

In incorporating these objectives, the council has implemented a number of cultural learning experiences for visitors and staff. Aloha Friday festivities take place each week 11:30 a.m. to
1 p.m. in the Hawaiian Medicinal Herb Garden (Mala La`au Lapa`au Hawai`i) with lei making, pineapple carving and Hawaiian games. Guests may also enjoy the Hui Mele (choir) and traditional Hawaiian musical entertainment performed by hotel employees at 12 noon. The Sense of Place Tour is conducted from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and includes the hotel's local artwork, Hawaiian Medicinal Herb Garden and Honokahua preservation site.

Members of Hawai`i Council have formed hula halau (hula dance group) Kaonohi`ok_la under the direction of kumu hula (hula teacher) Akoni Akana. The halau performs for convention groups, community events and other hotel functions. Weekly Hawaiian language classes, beginner ukulele and hula lessons are offered to all employees. The council is also dedicated to planning the hotel's involvement in cultural events.

"The Hawai`i Council is an integral part of The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua," said general manager John Toner. "We encourage employees in every department and at every level to participate in the committee's activities and to share their aloha with our island visitors."
